ah-KILL-lee-ah mil-lih-FOE-lee-um 'Balvinred' NEW VINTAGE RED

Deciduous Perennial Compact, Upright in the Asteraceae Family
A brilliant, patented New Vintage series yarrow bred for compact, repeat-blooming color from early summer well into fall.

Achillea millefolium 'Balvinred', sold under the trademark New Vintage Red, is a patented yarrow bred by JinJoo Bae at Ball Horticultural Co. in Elburn, Illinois (US Plant Patent 25,618). It resulted from a 2010 cross between two proprietary A. millefolium selections — one with light pink flowers, the other with medium red flowers — and was selected in 2011 for its compact, freely branching habit. Flat-topped clusters of small red flowers with cream centers open continuously from late spring through summer. It is part of the wider patented New Vintage series, alongside White, Rose, and Violet color forms already in this catalog.

Pros

  • Compact, upright habit that holds its shape without staking
  • Long, repeat bloom from early summer well into fall
  • Drought-tolerant once established and easy in average, well-drained soil
  • Attracts bees and butterflies; deer and rabbit resistant

Cons

  • Patent-protected (PP25,618) — unlicensed commercial propagation is restricted
  • No particular disease resistance noted; can be susceptible to aphids and powdery mildew in humid or crowded conditions
  • Best color develops in full sun; can fade in too much shade
Highlights Patented (US PP25,618) selection bred by Ball Horticultural Co., part of the New Vintage series alongside White, Rose, and Violet color forms already in this catalog. Prized for its compact habit and unusually long, repeat-flowering season for a yarrow.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

No Pricing or Availability Right Now

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
