Decorating with Fall Annuals

Flowering mums are available in a variety of vibrant fall colors - white, yellow, orange, bronze, pink, burgundy, red, and purple. Cabbage and Kale feature deep greens, blue-tones, pinks, reds and whites. Celosia's feathery plumes are as vibrant as mums, but with more texture. And the grasses range from blues, to greens to browns and accent the fall tones beautifully. Add to that some of the amazing fall blooming perennials that are available, and the only thing holding you back from creating a gorgeous planter on your front porch or garden bed is your own decision to take the leap and give it a go!

Large mums make a dramatic impact on a porch or patio.

We love their oversized patio pots of mums, and the 2 gallon pots of cabbage that wow members every year when they pick them up.

For an easy drop in or use as-is, consider the "mixed kale planter" This 14" container features several oversized cabbage and kale plants and can either be displayed as is, popped into a larger pot, or transplanted into a favorite pot. It's also a great gift!

Similarly, the Mumkin planters are super fun and a quick way to dress up the patio or porch for Halloween. This adorable pumpkin planter holds a large mum plant (several color options to choose from). 

If you're interested in adorning your window boxes with annuals, or perhaps have an existing "thriller" in a container (such as a boxwood, you may want to opt for a flat of 4" pots vs the larger sizes available.

There are many varieties of cabbage, kale, mums, celosia, petchoa and pansies in the 4" pot size, which is perfect for slotting into smaller spaces. They will continue to grow and fill in over the coming weeks as long as they are well watered and some fresh soil is incorporated into the container.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
