Why You Should Take Your Houseplant for a Walk on July 27

Every July 27, (a few) plant lovers around the world celebrate a quirky and delightful holiday: Take Your Houseplant for a Walk Day. Admittedly, this sounds like a social media stunt (and you'll probably amuse your connections if you can snap a photograph), but this day is rooted in real benefits—for both you and your leafy companions. Whether you're a seasoned plant parent or just starting your indoor jungle, here's why you should grab your favorite fiddleleaf fig and head outside.

It's a Great Way to Check for Pests

When you take your plant outside, you're more likely to give it a thorough once-over. This is the perfect time to inspect for pests like spider mites, aphids, or fungus gnats that may be hiding under leaves or in the soil. Catching these early can save your plant—and your other houseplants—from a full-blown infestation.

Plants Need a Change of Scenery Too

Just like people, houseplants can benefit from a change in environment. Taking your plant outside exposes it to natural sunlight, which is often more beneficial than artificial indoor lighting. Even a short walk can give your plant a healthy dose of full-spectrum light, helping it photosynthesize more efficiently and grow stronger. Speaking of changes of scenery, consider repotting the plant when you get home to give it more space to grow.

Fresh Air = Happy Leaves

Indoor air can be dry and stagnant, especially in climate-controlled environments. A walk outdoors gives your plant access to fresh, oxygen-rich air, which can help improve respiration and reduce the risk of mold or mildew. Plus, a gentle breeze can strengthen stems and simulate the natural conditions many plants evolved in.

You'll Bond with Your Plant

Yes, really. Studies show that interacting with plants can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve mood. Taking your plant for a walk is a mindful, calming activity that encourages you to slow down and appreciate nature—even if it's just one potted pothos at a time.

It Sparks Joy & Conversation

Let's face it: walking a plant is a conversation starter. Whether you're strolling through your neighborhood or just sitting on your porch, people will notice—and probably smile. It's a fun way to connect with fellow plant lovers, share tips, and maybe even inspire someone to start their own plant journey.

Keep Your Houseplants Safe!

On your walk, keep in mind that most houseplants are not used to hot temperatures, direct mid-day sun or strong winds, so keep them protected. Outside of your home, houseplants may be exposed to imperfectly-behaved animals, so keep an eye on your plants!

Houseplants do more than decorate our homes. They purify the air, boost our mental health, and bring a touch of the wild into our daily lives. Take Your Houseplant for a Walk Day is a lighthearted way to honor the role these green companions play in our well-being. So this July 27, pick your favorite plant, grab a wagon or a tote, and take it for a stroll. Whether it's a quick lap around the block or a sunny spot in the backyard, your plant will thank you—and you might just find yourself smiling a little more too!

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
