Part shade means 3 to 6 hours of sunlight, similar to plants labeled as “part sun” but with a preference for protection from intense afternoon sun. These plants like morning sun with afternoon shade, or filtered light through trees, etc. Part shade plants benefit from light but need some protection to stay looking their best, especially during the peak of summer.
Some perennial species which thrive in part shade are Coral Bells, Cardinal Flower, Cranesbill, Anemone, Astilbe and Columbine. Here are the Plant Club's best-selling plants for part shade.
Quick tip
If you are unsure which category your space falls into, observe what time it receives direct sunlight throughout the day. Morning sun is typically softer and suitable for “part shade” plants, while afternoon sun is stronger and more suitable for “part sun” or "full sun" plants.
