Full sun means the plant tolerates at least 6 or more hours of direct sunlight per day.
In the Chicagoland area, this typically includes late morning through afternoon sun. Most sun-loving plants will produce the most flowers and strongest growth in these conditions. Keep in mind that areas near buildings, pavement, or reflective surfaces can feel hotter and may increase water needs.
Some perennial species which thrive in hot, full sun areas are Baptisia, Black-Eyed Susan, Catmint, Coneflowers, Phlox, Salvia, and Yarrow. Here are the Plant Club's best-selling plants for full sun.
Quick tip:
If you are unsure which category your space falls into, observe what time it receives direct sunlight throughout the day. Morning sun is typically softer and suitable for “part shade” plants, while afternoon sun is stronger and more suitable for “part sun” or "full sun" plants.
