Architectural Florals: Holiday Ikebana with Guest Speaker Paula Danoff

Location: Highland Park Presbyterian Church

The trend in flower arranging and event arrangements is towards a more structured, minimalist style, using natural wood elements such as tree branches. Ikebana embodies this design aesthetic. Paula is a 3rd level teacher with the Sogetsu School of Ikebana. She has studied Ikebana since 1987 when she moved to Tokyo, Japan. She joined Ikebana International while there and was the Communications Chairman on their International Board for 4 years. Upon returning to the States in 1993, she has continued studying Ikebana. She gives lectures, demonstrations and participates in Ikebana Exhibitions around the USA, including two exhibitions a year at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Paula will explain and demonstrate the Ikebana style using holiday (Thanksgiving and Christmas) materials.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
