Fall Native Plant Sale

Location: INDIAN HILL PARK

all Is the New SpringGet Ready to See Autumn in a Whole New Light! DON'T HANG UP YOUR TROWEL JUST YET — Go Green Winnetka is back and digging in for its sixth annual Fall Native Plant Sale. Turns out, September is prime planting season. Warm soil, cooler air, generous sun, and steady rain give new roots the perfect head start before the first frost rolls in. Native plants aren't just pretty — they're the real MVPs of your local ecosystem. These plants pull pollinators, assist Monarch butterflies in their journeys, tackle stormwater like pros, and barely ask for a favor in return — low-maintenance, high-impact. SAVE THE DATE: SEPTEMBER 12, 9–11 AM, INDIAN HILL PARK, 131 Wilson Street, Winnetka. Whether you're a green thumb or just plant-curious, our native plant experts will be there to help you dig up (sorry) the perfect picks for your garden. Root for your local ecosystem — see you there! Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
