About Me

Hi everyone! I am Jen Sprague, and I am thrilled to be leading the Lake Forest Hub of the North Shore Plant Club again this year.

I live on the edge of Lake Forest in the Mettawa area with my husband, and our two daughters. You can usually find me working in my garden, at the farm riding horses with my girls, and outside exploring all of the wonderful open lands in our area.

I have spent the last few years transforming my space--working on my food forest, building native habitats, and growing rare and interesting heirloom vegetables and flowers, mostly from seed.

If you need help finding something interesting for your space, reach out - I'd love to chat and show you around my gardens. I love meeting our members, neighbors, and sharing knowledge, can't wait to meet you!

Testimonials

We've been helping people get affordable access to great plants on the North Shore since 2018.

Here's what people are saying about the Lake Forest Plant Club:

Thank you very much out of this world plants. I can’t believe they’re real they’re so beautiful and so reasonably priced Jen for the quality oh my goodness thank you.

What a beautiful product. I’m so so excited about the plant quality and continue to water my outrageously beautiful mums that I got from you.

Thanks and we would like to continue to support this venture. Plants are way too expensive and I hope this solution is successful!

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
