About Lavenders
Lavandula (Lavender) is a genus of roughly 35-40 aromatic, shrubby herbs in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to the Mediterranean region and prized for their fragrant foliage and purple-blue flower spikes. North Shore carries cultivars from three distinct groups that differ meaningfully in bloom form and winter hardiness: English lavender (L. angustifolia), French/Spanish lavender (L. stoechas), and the larger lavandin hybrids (L. x intermedia) -- see each species' own page for group-specific care and hardiness. Across the genus, lavender does best in lean, well-draining, sunny conditions and actually prefers nutrient-poor, sandy or gritty soil over rich, loamy soil. Most lavenders bloom in summer and will often produce a second flush if spent spikes are cut back promptly.
