Common Sage is the baseline culinary species of the genus, native to the northern Mediterranean (Italy, Greece, Croatia, France, Spain). A short-lived, semi-woody sub-shrub grown for its aromatic gray-green leaves, used fresh or dried for cooking. Note: much "sage" sold in supermarkets is actually Salvia fruticosa (Greek sage), a different species -- true S. officinalis has a milder, more classic sage flavor.
