Scarlet Sage is native to Brazil at high elevation (2,000-3,000m) in a warm, humid climate year-round, and does not survive freezing temperatures. It is grown as an annual bedding plant throughout nearly all of the US, including Chicago -- not reliably hardy anywhere outside the warmest pockets of zones 10-11. The wild species grows to roughly 4ft tall; garden/bedding cultivars are bred much shorter and more compact.
