White Mazus (Mazus reptans 'Albus')
MAY-zus REP-tanz AL-bus

Semi-Evergreen Perennial Creeping, Mat-Forming in the Mazaceae Family
Beautiful groundcover for an area with reasonably moist soil. White, long-flowering blooms over a creeping mat of foliage.

'Albus' is a white-flowered selection of creeping mazus that forms the same dense, ground-hugging mat of small, glossy, toothed foliage as the species, but opens mini, orchid-like flowers in pure white freckled with yellow instead of the species' typical lavender-blue. Like other Mazus reptans selections, it spreads by rooting stems, tolerates light foot traffic, and takes a bit more sun than the purple-flowered forms, making it a versatile little groundcover for paths, rock gardens, and damp, low spots.

Pros

  • Pure white, yellow-freckled flowers stand out against the dark green mat
  • Tolerates more sun than the purple-flowered forms
  • Spreads quickly to fill small spaces and smother weeds
  • Handles light foot traffic and occasional mowing

Cons

  • Needs consistent moisture; avoid letting it dry out or sit waterlogged
  • Can spread beyond its intended area if not edged or contained
Why Like N/A - Cultivar
Highlights A crisp white-flowered take on creeping mazus -- tolerant of more sun than the purple form, and just as happy filling gaps between pavers or edging a damp garden bed.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
