Violet Pinwheels is a hybrid groundcover phlox bred by Dr. James R. Ault (Chicagoland Grows, US Plant Patent 25,884), from a 2008 controlled cross of Phlox bifida (sand phlox) and Phlox kelseyi 'Lemhi Purple', selected in 2010. It forms a low, spreading mat covered in violet-purple, pinwheel-shaped flowers in mid-to-late spring, behaving similarly to Phlox subulata though it is a distinct hybrid.
