Soft yellow flowers appear in the late spring and age to dusty raspberry purple. The dark stems make the bicolor flowers stand out. It forms a full, bushy habit to provide structure to any garden.
Baptisia 'Pink Lemonade' is part of the Decadence Deluxe series, bred by Hans A. Hansen at Walters Gardens from an open-pollinated cross involving 'Red Riding Hood.' Its flowers open a soft, clear yellow and blush to a dusty raspberry-purple as they age, so both colors show at once along each long raceme -- a two-tone effect unusual among Baptisia cultivars. Deep blue-green, pea-like foliage forms a dense, mounded, compact clump that stays tidy through the season without staking, and the plant later produces showy seed pods that extend interest into fall and winter. Like other false indigos, it develops a deep taproot and performs best where it can grow undisturbed for years.

Pros

  • Two-tone yellow-to-raspberry-purple flowers unusual among Baptisia cultivars
  • Compact, mounded habit suited to smaller gardens than many Baptisia
  • Deer-resistant, salt-tolerant, and drought-tolerant once established
  • Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators

Cons

  • Deep taproot makes established plants difficult to divide or transplant
  • Slow to reach full size and mature bloom
  • All plant parts are toxic if ingested
Highlights Soft yellow flowers blush to dusty raspberry-purple as they open, giving each raceme a two-tone look rarely seen in Baptisia. Deep blue-green foliage forms a dense, compact mound, making this a good fit for gardens too small for most false indigo cultivars.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
