Silver Sceptre Sedge (Carex morrowii 'Silver Sceptre')
KARE-ex mor-ROE-ee-eye 'Silver Sceptre'

Semi-Evergreen Perennial in the Cyperaceae Family
Half-inch-wide, semi-evergreen leaves with a green center stripe and silvery-white edges; a fine, drought-tolerant choice for borders or rock gardens.
Carex morrowii 'Silver Sceptre' (Silver Sceptre Sedge) is a slow-growing, clump-forming ornamental sedge grown chiefly for its narrow, semi-evergreen foliage, which carries a green center stripe edged in crisp silvery-white and curls gracefully like ribbons. It bears only sparse, inconspicuous greenish flower spikes in spring. Best in part shade to full shade, it also tolerates some direct sun, and prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil, though established plants handle average garden conditions and occasional drought.

  • Deer resistant and drought tolerant once established
  • Low-maintenance, slow-spreading clump former
  • Tolerates full shade to partial sun

Cons

  • Foliage may brown back or go semi-dormant in harsh winters
  • Flowers are sparse and inconspicuous, offering little seasonal color
  • Prefers consistent moisture and resents prolonged drought while establishing
Highlights
  • Fine, ribbon-like foliage with a crisp silver-and-green variegation pattern
  • Slowly spreads by rhizomes into an attractive, low groundcover
  • Useful as an accent in borders, rock gardens, and containers

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
