Golden Butterfly Marguerite Daisy (Argyranthemum frutescens 'G15101' GOLDEN BUTTERFLY)
ar-ger-AN-them-um frew-TES-senz 'G15101' GOLDEN BUTTERFLY

Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) Upright, Bushy in the Asteraceae Family
A patented, darker-gold sport of the classic Butterfly Marguerite Daisy, blooming nonstop from spring to hard frost without deadheading — a low-fuss, heat-tolerant container and landscape standout.

Golden Butterfly is a darker-gold-flowered sport of the classic Butterfly Marguerite Daisy, discovered as a naturally-occurring whole-plant mutation in a Bellefonte, Pennsylvania greenhouse in 2014 and patented in 2019 (USPP 30,615, cultivar 'G15101'). Large, single daisy-form flowers with dark yellow ray florets and yellow-orange centers cover an upright, freely branching, bushy plant nearly all season.

Like other Marguerite daisies (Argyranthemum frutescens), it's a tender perennial native to the Canary Islands that can't survive a hard freeze; in the Chicago area it's grown as a warm-season annual for containers, mass plantings, and sunny landscape beds.

Pros

  • Blooms continuously from spring through hard frost with no deadheading needed
  • Freely branching, dense, bushy habit
  • More heat tolerant than older Marguerite daisy varieties
  • Deer-resistant per grower reports

Cons

  • Not cold-hardy; grown as a tender perennial/annual outside zones 10-11
  • Bloom can pause in stretches of consistently warm (high 70s+) nights
  • Patented (USPP 30,615) — propagating it for resale or trade isn't legally permitted
This plant is probably not winter-hardy outdoors where you live.
Highlights Award Winner, Continuous Bloom/Rebloomer, Long Blooming, Fall Interest, Heat Tolerant, Deadheading Not Necessary.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
