Superbells Doublette Love Swept Calibrachoa (Calibrachoa 'Superbells Doublette Love Swept')
kal-ih-brah-KOE-ah 'Superbells Doublette Love Swept'

Annual (usually grown as an annual near you) Mounded, Trailing in the Solanaceae Family
Deep pink double blooms edged in a fine white rim cover this trailing Calibrachoa from planting to hard frost. A Proven Winners Superbells Doublette pick for pots and hanging baskets.
Calibrachoa 'Superbells Doublette Love Swept' (US Plant Patent 30,804, cultivar code 'USCAL81302') is a Proven Winners selection bred by Ushio Sakazaki, producing abundant small double flowers in deep pink edged with a fine white rim on each petal. Plants form a mounding-to-trailing habit 6-10in tall, spreading 12-24in and trailing up to 16in - a slightly shorter trail than most Superbells siblings. It is heat tolerant and flowers continuously from planting until the first hard frost with no deadheading required, and was a Top Performer at multiple university trials in 2018. In the Chicago area it is grown as a warm-season annual, since its true hardiness (USDA zone 9-11) does not survive winter here.

Pros

  • Continuous, no-deadhead bloom all season
  • Award-winning performer at multiple university trials
  • Fully double blooms with a distinctive white-edged picotee
  • Attracts hummingbirds and pollinators

Cons

  • Dislikes constantly wet soil - needs good drainage
  • Not winter hardy in Chicago (zone 9-11) - grown as an annual
  • Shorter trailing reach than most Superbells siblings
This plant is probably not winter-hardy outdoors where you live.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
