Blue My Mind Dwarf Morning Glory (Evolvulus 'Blue My Mind')
ee-VOL-view-lus 'Blue My Mind'

Annual (usually grown as an annual near you) Trailing, Mounded in the Convolvulaceae Family
True-blue flowers and fuzzy, silvery-green foliage on an extremely heat-tolerant plant -- a nonstop performer in hot summer weather.

Evolvulus 'Blue My Mind' is a patented selection of Brazilian dwarf morning glory, bred for an especially heavy, season-long show of true-blue flowers over fine, fuzzy, silvery-green foliage. Staying low and trailing at just 4 to 8 inches tall and spreading 10 to 12 inches wide, it's equally happy spilling from a container or hanging basket as it is massed as a sunny groundcover. It genuinely thrives in heat -- the hotter the better -- and once established it tolerates short dry spells, though it blooms and grows best with consistent moisture.

Pros

  • Heavy, nonstop show of true-blue flowers all season with no deadheading required
  • Genuinely heat-loving; performs best in the hottest part of summer
  • Fine, silvery-green foliage adds texture even between flushes of bloom
  • Compact, trailing habit suits containers, baskets, and groundcover alike

Cons

  • Not cold hardy and sensitive to even light frost; grown as an annual in the Chicago area
  • Needs full sun to perform its best
  • Needs regular watering for the first few weeks while it establishes
This plant is probably not winter-hardy outdoors where you live.
Highlights

A patented, extra-floriferous selection bred specifically for heavy, continuous bloom and strong heat tolerance -- it keeps producing true-blue flowers through the hottest stretches of summer with no deadheading needed.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
