A compact ornamental cabbage with a creamy white, frilled-edge center surrounded by blue-green outer leaves that deepen in color with the first fall frosts.

Osaka White is a compact, non-heading ornamental cabbage grown for its rosette of broad, wavy-edged leaves rather than for eating. Blue-green outer leaves fan out around a dense, creamy white to ivory center, and the contrast sharpens as night temperatures drop in fall. Like other members of the Ornamental Cabbage and Kale Group, it is a biennial grown as a cool-season annual: plants are set out in late summer or early fall for a display that holds through several hard frosts and often into early winter.

The 'Osaka' name refers to a widely sold ornamental-cabbage series prized for its uniform, tightly layered rosettes and reliable fall color, distinct from loose-leaf ornamental kales such as the Songbird or Peacock series.

Pros

  • Reliable, long-lasting fall and early-winter color in the garden
  • Tolerates light frost and even improves in color after cold snaps
  • Compact, uniform rosette habit suits containers, borders, and mass plantings
  • Low maintenance once established

Cons

  • Susceptible to cabbage worms, aphids, and other brassica pests
  • Grown as an annual in the Chicago area; does not survive winter
  • Can look ragged by midsummer if planted too early; best timed for fall display
Highlights
  • Creamy white, ruffled center rosette on blue-green outer foliage
  • Color intensifies with cooler fall temperatures
  • Compact, mounded form, well suited to containers and edging
  • Part of the widely grown Osaka ornamental cabbage series

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
