Deciduous Perennial Mounded in the Boraginaceae Family
A Walters Gardens Siberian Bugloss with exceptionally large, thick silver leaves and improved heat tolerance -- a cross of 'Caucasian Carpet' and 'Jack Frost'.

Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack of Diamonds' (US Plant Patent 32,752) was bred by Hans A. Hansen at Walters Gardens in Zeeland, Michigan, from a 2015 cross of 'Caucasian Carpet' and the famous 'Jack Frost'. The result is a vigorous plant with very large, thick leaves -- silver overall with broad dark green veining -- that hold up better in heat and sun than many older Brunnera selections.

Light blue forget-me-not flowers appear on short stems above the foliage for about four weeks each spring. 'Jack of Diamonds' is hardy to USDA Zone 3 and, like its 'Jack Frost' parent, forms a dense, well-behaved mound rather than spreading aggressively.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
