Lisa Marie Lungwort (Pulmonaria 'Lisa Marie')
pull-mon-AR-ee-ah 'Lisa Marie'

Deciduous Perennial Low, Mounded, Clump-Forming in the Boraginaceae Family
Lisa Marie Lungwort is a naturally occurring sport found in a Belvidere, Illinois garden, prized for its pink-to-rose-red spring flowers above green, silver-mottled foliage.
Pulmonaria 'Lisa Marie' arose as a spontaneous whole-plant mutation discovered by Lisa and Bradley Grover in their own garden in Belvidere, Illinois, in 1995, and was patented in 2019 (US Plant Patent 31,226) from an unnamed, unpatented Pulmonaria parent. In mid- to late spring, clusters of pink-red flowers open from purple-tinged buds and fade toward a softer rose as they age. The green foliage carries subtle silvery-gray mottling that persists through the growing season, making this an Illinois-origin selection with straightforward, well-documented garden performance in full to part shade.

Pros

  • Pink-to-rose-red spring flowers above mottled green foliage
  • A genuine Illinois-origin selection, found and raised in Belvidere
  • Thrives in full shade to part shade
  • Low-maintenance, well-behaved clump former

Cons

  • Foliage can scorch if soil dries out in hot weather
  • Needs consistently moist, humusy soil to perform well
  • Flower color fades fairly quickly as blooms age
Highlights
  • Illinois-origin sport, discovered in Belvidere
  • Pink-to-rose-red flowers

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
