Elevate your garden with Ruby Red Perfection Ornamental Cabbage, featuring stunning, blue-gray outer leaves and a deep ruby center that add vibrant color to any landscape. Perfect for fall displays!

'Ruby Red Perfection' is a true heading red cabbage F1 hybrid, not an ornamental look-alike — it forms a dense, uniform, high-round head about 10-12 inches across, with deep ruby-red color that holds solid all the way through the head, not just on the outer wrapper leaves. The outer wrapper leaves have a blue-gray cast that contrasts with the ruby interior.

It matures in roughly 80 days from transplant and needs consistently rich, moist, well-drained soil to head up well. Popular both as a landscape plant for its color and as a kitchen cabbage — good fresh in slaws, cooked, or stored for the winter.

Pros

  • A true heading cabbage that's as useful in the kitchen as it is in the landscape
  • Deep ruby-red color holds solid all the way through the head
  • Compact, uniform habit suits borders and mixed beds

Cons

  • Needs consistently rich, well-drained soil and steady moisture to head up well
  • Susceptible to cabbage worms and other common brassica pests
  • Bolts and loses quality in sustained summer heat
Highlights A true heading red cabbage, not just an ornamental look-alike, with color that holds solid all the way through the head.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

No Pricing or Availability Right Now

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
