Pyromania Rocket's Red Glare Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia 'Pyromania Rocket's Red Glare')
ny-FOE-fee-ah 'Pyromania Rocket's Red Glare'

Deciduous Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) Clump-Forming, Upright in the Asphodelaceae Family
The longest bloomer in the Pyromania series: vivid red buds opening pale yellow, in flower for up to 14 weeks.

Kniphofia 'Pyromania Rocket's Red Glare' was the first of the Pyromania series to be patented (U.S. Plant Patent 30,772), bred by Hans A. Hansen of Walters Gardens from the same parent pairing as 'Backdraft' but a different, earlier seedling selection. Vivid red buds mature to a pale yellow (described by some retailers as creamy peach) on dense torches held over arching, gray-green foliage. It begins flowering in late spring and, per its own patent, can remain in bloom for up to about 14 weeks — the longest documented bloom duration of any cultivar in this series.

Pros

  • Longest bloom duration in the series (up to ~14 weeks)
  • Classic vivid red-to-yellow bicolor torches
  • Resists lodging
  • Deer and rabbit resistant
  • Attracts hummingbirds and pollinators

Cons

  • Hardiness to Zone 5 is less well documented than most series siblings - treat Zone 6 as the safer floor
  • Needs winter crown protection
  • Intolerant of wet soil
  • Active U.S. Plant Patent 30,772
This plant may be mostly winter-hardy outdoors where you live, but it may need protection to survive extreme weather.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
