Double Up White Begonia (Begonia semperflorens 'Double Up White')
bah-GO-nyah sem-per-FLOOR-enz 'Double Up White'

Annual (usually grown as an annual near you) Upright, Compact, Globe-Shaped in the Begoniaceae Family
Crisp white double blooms against near-black foliage — a wax begonia that thrives from full sun to full shade.

Double Up White is a compact, globe-shaped wax begonia prized for the crisp contrast between its pure white, fully double flowers and its dark bronze-to-black foliage. It is remarkably adaptable to light, performing well anywhere from full sun to full shade, and it flowers continuously from planting until frost without any deadheading. The plant stays dense and tidy on its own, making it a low-fuss choice for beds, borders, and containers where a clean white accent is wanted.

Pros

  • Pure white double flowers bloom non-stop from spring to frost
  • Self-cleaning — no deadheading needed
  • Thrives in everything from full sun to full shade
  • Dark bronze-to-black foliage makes the white blooms pop

Cons

  • Frost-tender annual in the Chicago area, replanted each year
  • Performs best with regular watering and feeding despite some drought tolerance
  • Dense globe habit needs good air circulation to avoid leaf disease
This plant is probably not winter-hardy outdoors where you live.
Highlights

Few wax begonias handle the full range from blazing sun to deep shade the way Double Up White does. Paired with foliage nearly black and flowers a clean, bright white, it reads as a crisp accent wherever it is planted.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
