Heart to Heart Burning Heart Elephant Ear (Caladium 'Heart to Heart Burning Heart')
kah-LAY-dee-um 'Heart to Heart Burning Heart'

Annual (usually grown as an annual near you) Upright in the Araceae Family
A Heart to Heart® caladium bred for sun, with bronze leaves splashed in salmon-orange -- color deepens in full sun, though it tolerates partial sun and shade too.

Caladium 'Heart to Heart Burning Heart' is a patented (USPP27,071) Heart to Heart® series caladium bred by Robert Dale Hartman of Classic Caladiums from a cross of 'Red Flash' and 'Twist N' Shout'. Its bronze upper leaves are splashed with vivid salmon-orange spots, on an intermediate-height, upright, uniform, vigorous plant. Retail growers report it tolerates full sun, partial sun, and shade, with color deepening in more sun -- a contrast to the patent's narrower 'shaded areas' note.

Pros

  • Bronze foliage with vivid salmon-orange spotting, most vibrant in full sun
  • Tolerates full sun, partial sun, and shade
  • Patented (USPP27,071), vigorous and uniform growth
  • Good for containers, beds, and mass plantings

Cons

  • Not winter-hardy in the Chicago area -- grown as a warm-season annual
  • Tubers are toxic if ingested by pets or people
  • Can be damaged by temperatures below 60°F
Highlights
  • Bronze and salmon-orange foliage
  • Best color in full sun
  • Patented Heart to Heart® series

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
