Lo & Behold Ruby Chip Butterfly Bush (Buddleja 'SMNBDD' LO & BEHOLD RUBY CHIP)
Buddleja 'SMNBDD' LO & BEHOLD RUBY CHIP

Deciduous Perennial Shrub in the Scrophulariaceae Family
Lo & Behold Ruby Chip butterfly bush is a space-saving dwarf habit fits anywhere, brightly colored ruby flowers all summer

Lo & Behold® Ruby Chip Butterfly Bush (Buddleja 'SMNBDD') is a miniature member of Dr. Dennis Werner's sterile Lo & Behold series, bred by Megan M. Mathey for Spring Meadow Nursery and patented in 2020 (US PP32,399). Selected in Grand Haven, Michigan in 2017 from a cross of 'Lilac Chip' and 'Miss Molly', it produces fragrant, dark reddish-purple flower spikes continuously from early summer until frost. Pollen is scarce and seed/fruit production has not been observed, so it stays tidy without self-seeding. At roughly 2.5 feet tall and wide, it's one of the smallest butterfly bushes available, with a cute, pincushion-like mounded habit that works well in small gardens and containers.

Pros

  • Fragrant, dark reddish-purple flower spikes continuously from early summer to frost
  • One of the most compact butterfly bushes available -- fits small gardens and containers
  • Low-seed, non-invasive compared to older Buddleja varieties
  • Drought and poor-soil tolerant once established
  • Attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds

Cons

  • Needs full sun to bloom well and stay compact
  • Benefits from an annual hard pruning in late winter
  • Can suffer winter dieback at the colder end of its hardiness range
Highlights Reblooms Fragrant Attracts Pollinators

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

No Pricing or Availability Right Now

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
