Blazin' Rose Bloodleaf (Iresine herbstii 'Blazin' Rose')
eer-eh-SEE-nee HERB-stee-eye 'Blazin' Rose'

Deciduous Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) in the Amaranthaceae Family

Iresine herbstii, known as Bloodleaf, is a tender tropical perennial in the amaranth family (Amaranthaceae), native to Brazil and grown here as a fast, colorful foliage accent. Its oval, deeply veined leaves are typically a rich red-purple, held on branching, bushy stems that respond well to pinching to stay compact and full. Flowers are tiny, greenish-white, and not showy — this plant is grown entirely for its foliage color, not for bloom. Evergreen and frost-tender, it is hardy only in USDA zones 10a-12b; in the Chicago area it is grown as a colorful annual for beds and containers, or brought indoors as a houseplant over winter.

Pros

  • Vivid, long-lasting red-purple foliage color all season
  • Easy to grow and tolerant of both part shade and full sun
  • Responds well to pinching for a bushy, full habit
  • Can be overwintered indoors as a houseplant

Cons

This plant is probably not winter-hardy outdoors where you live.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
