Pugster Pinker Butterfly Bush (Buddleja 'SMNBDB' PUGSTER PINKER)
Buddleja 'SMNBDB' PUGSTER PINKER

Deciduous Perennial Shrub in the Scrophulariaceae Family

Pugster Pinker Butterfly Bush (Buddleja 'SMNBDB') is part of the Pugster® series bred by Megan M. Mathey at Spring Meadow Nursery for Proven Winners, patented in 2021 (US PP33,565). Selected in 2017 in Grand Haven, Michigan from a cross of 'Miss Molly' and 'SMNBDPT', it packs full-sized, deep pink flower spikes with a bright orange eye onto a true dwarf plant, just 18-24in tall and 24-36in wide. It blooms non-stop from early summer until frost on sturdy stems bred for improved winter hardiness over older dwarf butterfly bush types. The patent notes scarce pollen and no observed seed or fruit production, though some retailers describe the series as not fully sterile -- worth keeping in mind where Buddleja self-seeding is a concern.

Pros

  • Full-sized, deep pink flower spikes with a bright orange eye on a true dwarf plant
  • Blooms non-stop from early summer until frost
  • Improved winter hardiness over older dwarf butterfly bush types
  • Deer and rabbit resistant; very drought tolerant once established

Cons

  • Needs full sun (6+ hours) to perform well
  • Slow to emerge in spring -- easy to mistake for dead before new growth appears
  • Sterility is disputed between sources; not a safe bet where self-seeding is a concern

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
