Miss Piggy Pig Squeak (Bergenia cordifolia 'Miss Piggy')
ber-GEN-ee-ah kor-dih-FOE-lee-ah 'Miss Piggy'

Evergreen Perennial Low, Spreading, Mounded in the Saxifragaceae Family
Bright pink, bell-shaped flowers rise above large, glossy dark-green leaves that take on bronze-red tones in winter -- a bold, reliable pigsqueak selection bred for extra-large foliage and consistent color.

Bergenia cordifolia 'Miss Piggy' (US Plant Patent 32,132) was bred by Hans A. Hansen for Walters Gardens as a self-pollinated seedling of Bergenia 'Sakura,' selected for a larger, more substantial leaf and more consistent pink flower color than its parent. Its large, glossy, deep green leaves form a low, spreading mound and take on attractive bronze-red tones through the winter months. In early to late spring, heavily-branched panicles of bell-shaped flowers open a lighter pink and deepen to a richer pink as they mature, held on reddish stems above the foliage for about a month. Like other Bergenia, its common name 'pigsqueak' comes from the squeaking sound its leaves make when rubbed between the fingers.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
