Lollies Buttermint Cobbitty Daisy (Argyranthemum frutescens 'Lollies Buttermint')
ar-ger-AN-them-um frew-TES-senz 'Lollies Buttermint'

Evergreen Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) Compact, Mounded in the Asteraceae Family
A compact, well-branched Marguerite daisy bred by Danziger, covered in buttery yellow-and-white daisy flowers over fine, deeply cut dark green foliage — an early, prolific bloomer for containers and beds.

Lollies Buttermint is a compact Marguerite (Cobbitty) daisy from Danziger's Lollies series, bred for a naturally mounded, well-branched habit and masses of large, buttery yellow flowers with white overtones over fine, deeply cut, dark green foliage.

Like other Marguerite daisies (Argyranthemum frutescens), it's a tender evergreen perennial native to the Canary Islands that can't survive a hard freeze; in the Chicago area it's grown as a warm-season annual for containers, borders, and mass plantings from spring through the first fall frost.

Pros

  • Early, prolific bloomer from late spring through fall
  • Naturally compact, well-branched, mounded habit needs little staking
  • Fine, ferny, deeply cut foliage looks good even between bloom flushes
  • Pollinator friendly

Cons

  • Not cold-hardy; grown as an annual outside zones 10-11
  • Best bloom needs regular deadheading
  • Dislikes standing water — needs well-drained soil
This plant is probably not winter-hardy outdoors where you live.
Highlights Part of Danziger's Lollies series, bred for an especially compact, early-flowering habit compared to older Marguerite daisy varieties.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
