A narrow, columnar barberry with fiery orange new growth that matures to bright gold, bred for resistance to summer leaf scorch.

Sunjoy Gold Pillar Barberry is a compact, upright cultivar of Japanese barberry prized for its narrow, columnar habit and season-long color. New spring foliage emerges soft orange to orange-red, matures to a bright golden yellow through summer, then deepens to fiery orange-red before dropping in fall. Small, largely inconspicuous pale yellow flowers appear in spring along the thorny stems. Unlike many golden-leaved barberries, this patented Proven Winners selection was specifically tested for resistance to summer leaf scorch, holding its color reliably in full sun.

Pros

  • Slim, columnar form fits tight spaces where wider shrubs won't
  • Bred and tested for resistance to leaf scorch, unlike many gold barberries
  • Bright, season-long foliage color from spring through fall
  • Deer resistant and drought tolerant once established

Cons

  • Sharp thorns make placement and pruning care important
  • Bloom is minor and not ornamentally significant
  • Berberis thunbergii is regulated as invasive in a number of states; check local rules before planting
Highlights
  • Narrow, columnar 'pillar' habit unusual among barberries
  • Orange-to-gold-to-orange seasonal color progression
  • Tested burn-resistant in full sun
  • US Plant Patent 18,082

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
