A compact, patented trispecies Carex hybrid with crisp green-and-white variegated foliage in an elegant arching, cascading mound. Evergreen and drought-tolerant once established, it's a standout in containers and border edges.

'Moon Falls' is a compact, patented ornamental sedge (US Plant Patent #35,022) bred by Elisabeth Bisschop and Bart Noordhuis for Eternal Plant Boijl BV of the Netherlands, introduced through Proven Winners/Walters Gardens. It is a complex trispecies hybrid - (Carex morrowii x Carex oshimensis) x Carex trifida - selected in 2018 for its compact, elegant habit. Long, linear leaves are strikingly variegated in yellow-green, light yellow, and white, arranged in a relatively compact, broadly outward-arching, cascading mound. Evergreen and bred for garden toughness, it has demonstrated tolerance of temperatures from about -20F to 95F as well as wind and rain in patent testing.

Pros

  • Striking creamy-white and green variegation holds its color and form year-round as an evergreen
  • Compact, cascading habit (8-12in tall, 12-16in wide) is ideal for containers and border edges
  • Bred for garden toughness - patent testing shows tolerance from -20C to 35C and resilience to wind and rain
  • Drought-tolerant once established, unlike many variegated sedges

Cons

  • A newer patented introduction (2023), so long-term garden performance data is still limited
  • Variegation can fade or scorch in intense afternoon sun in hot climates
  • As a propagation-protected patented cultivar, it cannot be propagated for sale without a license
Highlights

A compact, patented trispecies Carex hybrid bred specifically for garden toughness and an elegant arching habit. Its crisp white-and-green variegation and evergreen character make it a standout container and edging plant.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

No Pricing or Availability Right Now

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
