Trimburg Sedge (Carex x 'Trimburg')
KARE-ex ex 'Trimburg'

Evergreen Clump-Forming, Slow-Spreading in the Cyperaceae Family
A long-lived, evergreen sedge forming neat, rhizomatous clumps, with arching flower stalks held well above the foliage from late spring into fall.
Carex x 'Trimburg' (Trimburg Sedge) is a long-lived, evergreen sedge forming clumps that spread gradually by short rhizomes. Its narrow, grass-like leaves reach 12-18 inches tall and shift from medium green in full sun to darker green in shade. From late spring through fall it sends up arching flowering stalks about 2 feet long, with narrow, leaf-like bracts roughly 8 inches long and small flower spikes that mature from green to brown. Documentation on this particular cultivar is unusually sparse compared to most Carex in this collection; care is based on the limited information available and general practice for evergreen clumping sedges.

Pros

  • Long-lived, evergreen foliage that persists through the seasons
  • Neat, clump-forming habit with only gradual spread by short rhizomes
  • Unusually long bloom display, with arching flower stalks from late spring into fall
  • Foliage color shifts attractively between sun and shade

Cons

  • Very little horticultural documentation exists for this specific cultivar
  • Flowers are small and not especially showy despite their long display window
  • Water and light needs are extrapolated from limited source material -- worth confirming against supplier notes if available
Highlights
  • Evergreen, clump-forming foliage that changes shade between sun and shade exposure
  • Long-lasting arching flower stalks held well above the foliage
  • A relatively rare, lesser-known selection in the genus

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
