Chrysalis™ Steel Blue features vibrant periwinkle blue, cone-shaped flower clusters that stand out amongst deep green foliage.

This is Chrysalis Steel Blue Buddleia, and it features bright blue to purple blooms and deep green foliage. Blooming in the spring and lasting into the late summer, this butterfly bush is well loved by butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. It is easy to care for and is even frost tolerant with a hardiness degree down to -25 degrees Fahrenheit. Chrysalis Steel Blue Buddleia is a compact variety standing 20-28 inches tall at maturity, and can spread up to 18-24 inches. In the Northern zones, they generally die back to the ground in the winter then come back up in the spring. Southern zones may find the stems to be more hardy.

Pros

  • Attracts pollinators (as you might expect)
  • Vibrant colors in a long bloom season, from summer into fall, after many other plants have faded
  • Grow fast & don't need care once established to stay alive

Cons

  • Not officially invasive in Illinois, but it can self-seed and spread beyond intended areas
  • Can die back to the ground in a cold winter
  • Can become leggy without regular pruning
  • Needs full sun to thrive

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
