Noble Native Woodland Sedge (Carex laxiculmis 'Noble Native')
KARE-ex laxiculmis 'Noble Native'

Semi-Evergreen Perennial Arching, Clump-Forming in the Cyperaceae Family
A patent-pending selection of our native Creeping Sedge, with soft, arching blue-green foliage edged in creamy white. Forms a graceful, low groundcover for shady, woodland gardens and holds its good looks into fall.

'Noble Native' is a patent-pending (PPAF), variegated selection of Carex laxiculmis (Creeping Sedge/Spreading Sedge), a woodland sedge native to the eastern United States, introduced through Proven Winners/Walters Gardens. It forms soft, arching clumps of narrow, blue-green leaves edged in creamy white, reaching 6-12 inches tall and spreading 12-18 inches wide. Grown primarily for its fine-textured, variegated foliage rather than its inconspicuous tan flower spikes, it brings genuine native-species toughness - along with deer and rabbit resistance - to shaded woodland gardens, borders, and naturalized plantings.

Pros

  • Creamy-white variegated foliage brightens shady spots without sacrificing a true native pedigree
  • Deer and rabbit resistant, a rarity among showy variegated groundcovers
  • Low, arching habit (6-12in) spreads gently to form an attractive woodland groundcover
  • Holds good foliage color and texture through fall and into winter in milder climates

Cons

  • A newer patent-pending introduction, so long-term performance data is still limited
  • Flowers are inconspicuous and grown for foliage, not bloom
  • Prefers consistent shade and moisture; performs poorly in hot, dry, sunny spots
Highlights

A patent-pending, variegated selection of our native Creeping Sedge, combining creamy-white foliage interest with genuine deer and rabbit resistance - a graceful, low-maintenance groundcover for shaded gardens.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

No Pricing or Availability Right Now

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
