Whopper Salmon with Dark Leaf Begonia (Begonia 'Whopper Salmon with Dark Leaf')
bah-GO-nyah 'Whopper Salmon with Dark Leaf'

Annual (usually grown as an annual near you) Compact, Bushy, Mounded in the Begoniaceae Family
With flowers nearly twice the size of a typical bedding begonia, Whopper Salmon Bronze Leaf brings bold, nonstop salmon-pink color to sun or shade all season long.

A vigorous, extra-large-flowered member of Benary's interspecific Begonia x benariensis Whopper series, Whopper Salmon Bronze Leaf produces enormous clusters of salmon-pink blooms above glossy bronze foliage. Roughly 20-25% larger in every dimension than Benary's BIG series, it grows into a compact, bushy, mounded plant reaching 32-40in tall and 24-26in wide, tolerating conditions from full sun to full shade. Bred for high-impact landscape color, it blooms continuously from planting until frost with essentially no deadheading required.

Pros

  • Extra-large flower clusters, roughly 20-25% bigger than the BIG series
  • Thrives from full sun to full shade
  • Blooms continuously from planting to frost
  • Heat tolerant and low-maintenance

Cons

  • Annual in northern climates; will not overwinter outdoors
  • Best in larger containers or open landscape beds given its size
Highlights
  • One of the largest-flowered begonias in Benary's interspecific lineup
  • Bronze foliage contrasts beautifully with salmon-pink blooms
  • Bred by Benary as a landscaper favorite for low-maintenance, high-impact color

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

No Pricing or Availability Right Now

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
