Silver Dollar Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus cinerea)
[yew-kah-LIP-tus sin-AIR-ee-ah]

Evergreen Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) in the Myrtaceae Family
Fast-growing Australian evergreen prized for its round, silvery-blue "silver dollar" foliage and strong eucalyptus fragrance -- tender in Chicago, where it's grown as a container or annual accent.

Eucalyptus cinerea, the Silver Dollar Eucalyptus or Argyle Apple, is a fast-growing evergreen tree native to southeastern Australia, reaching 25-60 feet tall in its native range and warm, frost-free climates. It is best known for its rounded, silvery-blue, coin-like juvenile leaves held on arching stems -- the foliage most often sold for cut-flower arrangements and florist work.

In the Chicago area, where it is not winter-hardy, it is grown as a fast-growing annual or tender perennial for its foliage, either in containers that can be moved indoors or as a seasonal planting that is replaced each year. Grown this way, it rarely reaches flowering size; mature specimens in frost-free climates produce small, creamy-white flowers in summer that are often hidden among the foliage.

Pros

  • Striking round, silvery-blue "silver dollar" foliage
  • Strong, pleasant eucalyptus fragrance
  • Very fast growing
  • Excellent cut foliage for arrangements

Cons

  • Not winter-hardy in the Chicago area; grown as an annual or tender perennial
  • Rarely flowers when grown as a seasonal container/annual plant
  • Leaves/oils can irritate skin or be toxic if ingested
This plant is probably not winter-hardy outdoors where you live.
Highlights The classic "silver dollar" eucalyptus of the florist trade, grown here in the Chicago area for its fast-growing, intensely fragrant, coin-shaped silvery-blue foliage rather than as a permanent tree.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
