Moonshine Yarrow (Achillea 'Moonshine')
ah-KILL-lee-ah 'Moonshine'

Deciduous Perennial Upright, Spreading in the Asteraceae Family
Upright, clump-forming yarrow with aromatic silver-gray foliage and pale lemon-yellow flowers from June to September. Excellent for cutting and drying; stays most upright in full sun on lean, well-drained soil.

Achillea 'Moonshine' is a compact, clump-forming yarrow prized for its finely cut, aromatic silver-gray foliage and flat-topped clusters of pale lemon-yellow flowers held on sturdy, upright stems from June into September. Unlike the straight species, this sterile hybrid does not spread by rhizomes or self-seed, staying a well-behaved clump rather than running. It performs best in full sun with lean, sharply drained soil, where its stems stay upright without staking; rich soil or shade tend to cause flopping and increase susceptibility to powdery mildew and other foliar diseases. Drought-, heat-, and salt-tolerant, deer- and rabbit-resistant, and a favorite of bees and butterflies, it also makes an excellent cut and dried flower.

Pros

  • Long summer bloom (June–September) of distinctive pale lemon-yellow flowers, paler than most other yarrows
  • Drought-, heat-, and salt-tolerant once established; deer- and rabbit-resistant
  • Aromatic, ferny silver-gray foliage attractive even out of bloom
  • Excellent for cutting and drying; attracts bees and butterflies

Cons

  • Prone to powdery mildew, stem rot, botrytis, and root rot, especially in humid conditions, shade, or poorly-drained/crowded plantings
  • Flops without full sun and lean, well-drained soil
  • Can be short-lived, particularly where summers are hot and humid
  • Benefits from division every 3–5 years to stay vigorous
Highlights Distinctive pale lemon-yellow flowers on a well-behaved, drought-tolerant clump; excellent for cutting and drying.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
