Symphyotrichum novae-angliae Purple Dome is one of the most widely grown selections of New England Aster, valued for its naturally compact, dome-shaped habit that needs no pinching to stay tidy, unlike the tall, floppy species. It was first observed along a Pennsylvania roadside by Robert Seip and introduced by Mt Cuba Center in 1989. From late summer into fall it is covered in semi-double, violet-purple, yellow-centered flowers, an excellent late-season nectar source for bees and butterflies.
