Arizona Sun Blanket Flower (Gaillardia x grandiflora 'Arizona Sun')
gay-LARD-ee-ah ex gran-dih-FLOOR-ah 'Arizona Sun'

Deciduous Perennial Mounded
Vibrant fiery orange-red blossoms of Arizona Sun Gaillardia are accented by a ring of rich flame yellow. Leave spent flower heads to attract goldfinches as the season ends!

'Arizona Sun' is a compact, AAS award-winning selection of the garden hybrid blanket flower, Gaillardia x grandiflora. It forms a neat, low mound of grayish-green, lance-shaped leaves and blooms continuously from early summer through fall with large, fiery orange-red flowers tipped in bright yellow. Shorter and more uniform than older Gaillardia types, it is well suited to borders, containers, and mass plantings, and tolerates heat and drought once established.

Pros

  • AAS award-winning compact habit, shorter than most other Gaillardia
  • Continuous fiery red-and-yellow bloom all summer
  • Very drought-tolerant once established
  • Attracts pollinators; seed heads draw goldfinches in fall

Cons

  • Can be short-lived, especially in heavy or wet soil
  • Benefits from deadheading to keep blooming strongly
Highlights 'Arizona Sun' was an All-America Selections (AAS) award winner in 2005, prized for its compact, uniform habit compared to older, taller Gaillardia x grandiflora types. It is typically grown from seed and sold under its own name by multiple seed companies.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
