Gartenmeister Upright Fuchsia (Fuchsia 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt')
FEWK-see-ah 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt'

Deciduous Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) Upright, Bushy in the Onagraceae Family
A historic upright fuchsia with clusters of slender orange-red tubular flowers over bronze foliage.

Fuchsia 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt' is an upright, bushy triphylla hybrid, one of the oldest and most recognizable fuchsia cultivars still widely grown. Clusters of long, slender, bright orange-red tubular flowers dangle from reddish-bronze foliage (purple on the underside) from summer into autumn, making it a strong hummingbird attractant. It's more heat- and sun-tolerant than many fuchsias, and more tender, needing winter protection below roughly Zone 11.

Pros

  • Clusters of long, slender orange-red flowers are a strong hummingbird draw
  • Bronze-tinted foliage (purple beneath) adds interest even between bloom flushes
  • More heat- and sun-tolerant than many fuchsias
  • Upright, bushy habit works in beds and large containers, not just baskets

Cons

  • More tender than most fuchsias; needs protection below roughly Zone 11
  • Needs consistently moist soil, especially in containers
  • Larger size (to 3ft) needs more room than compact basket types
This plant is probably not winter-hardy outdoors where you live.
Highlights

One of the oldest fuchsia cultivars still in wide cultivation, 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt' is a triphylla-type hybrid known for clusters of long, slender, bright orange-red tubular flowers set against bronze-tinted foliage that's purple on the underside. It blooms from summer into autumn, draws hummingbirds reliably, and tolerates more heat and sun than most fuchsias — though it's also more tender, needing winter protection in all but the warmest climates.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
