Pomegranate Yarrow (Achillea millefolium 'Pomegranate')
ah-KILL-lee-ah mil-lih-FOE-lee-um 'Pomegranate'

Deciduous Perennial Compact, Bushy in the Asteraceae Family
A compact Tutti Frutti™ series yarrow with rich pomegranate-red flower clusters over ferny, aromatic foliage — long-blooming, drought-tolerant, and a reliable cut flower.

'Pomegranate' is a naturally-occurring whole-plant mutation discovered within the Achillea millefolium 'Summer Pastels' seed strain in Alphen aan den Rijn, the Netherlands, in 2003. Bred by Elisabeth Sahin-Georgiadou for K Sahin Zaden BV and protected under US Plant Patent 20,763 (filed 2008, granted 2010), it was fixed and introduced as part of the Tutti Frutti™ series by Blooms of Bressingham — the same series and seed-strain lineage that produced Apricot Delight Yarrow.

Unlike the open-pollinated 'Summer Pastels' mix, 'Pomegranate' breeds true to its deep, pomegranate-red color. It has a compact, upright-and-mounding habit that holds up better than taller yarrows in wind and heavy rain, along with the drought tolerance and pollinator appeal typical of the species.

Pros

  • Rich pomegranate-red flower clusters over a long, repeat bloom season
  • Compact, uniform habit — sturdier and less prone to flopping than taller yarrows
  • Drought-tolerant, deer/rabbit-resistant, and salt-tolerant
  • Excellent as a fresh or dried cut flower

Cons

  • Still under active US plant patent — unlicensed propagation isn't permitted
  • Needs full sun and lean, well-drained soil to avoid weak growth
  • Susceptible to powdery mildew and stem rot in humid or wet conditions
Highlights Part of the Tutti Frutti™ series and a fixed, patented sport of the 'Summer Pastels' seed strain — the same lineage as Apricot Delight Yarrow. Valued for its rich pomegranate-red color, compact and sturdy habit, and long repeat bloom season.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

No Pricing or Availability Right Now

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
