Saucy Seduction Yarrow (Achillea millefolium 'Saucy Seduction')
ah-KILL-lee-ah mil-lih-FOE-lee-um 'Saucy Seduction'

Deciduous Perennial Upright, Mounding in the Asteraceae Family
Rose-pink flowers with tiny white centers over aromatic, fern-like foliage — a compact, mounding sport of Summer Pastels bred for a tidy, sturdy habit.

'Saucy Seduction' is a patented (US Plant Patent 20,782) naturally-occurring sport of Achillea millefolium 'Summer Pastels', discovered in Alphen aan den Rijn, the Netherlands, in 2003, and bred by Elisabeth Sahin-Georgiadou for K Sahin Zaden BV — the same breeder, parentage, discovery year, and location as the related Pomegranate Yarrow, though a separate, distinct sport with its own patent. It's marketed under the Seduction™ series name, introduced by Blooms of Bressingham.

It forms a compact, upright, mounding clump of aromatic, fern-like green foliage, with rose-pink flowers centered in white blooming from June to August. It's more compact and sturdier-stemmed than many older Achillea millefolium varieties, drought-tolerant once established, and a popular choice for cutting gardens.

Pros

  • Rose-pink flowers with white centers over a long summer bloom season
  • Compact, sturdy, mounding habit — bred for tidier structure than older yarrows
  • Drought- and deer-resistant once established
  • Good fresh or dried cut flower

Cons

  • Patented — propagation restricted to licensed growers
  • Sources disagree on mature spread (as little as ~12 in. per the patent, up to 32 in. per this record) — worth confirming in person
Highlights A patented naturally-occurring sport of Achillea millefolium 'Summer Pastels', discovered the same year and location as the related Pomegranate Yarrow — bred by the same breeder, but a separate, distinct sport with its own more compact habit.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
