Sprengel's Sedge (Carex sprengelii)
KARE-ex sprengelii

Deciduous Perennial Clump-Forming, Slow-Spreading in the Cyperaceae Family
Grass-like perennial. Long bright green leaves cascade from a clump. Tiny light green flowers
Carex sprengelii (Sprengel's Sedge) is a native North American woodland sedge forming loose, arching clumps of narrow, bright green leaves that slowly spread into colonies by short rhizomes. In spring, delicate, drooping flower and fruit spikes dangle from wiry stems, with creamy-yellow stamens giving way to greenish perigynia that mature to dark brown by early summer. Found naturally in rich, mesic woodlands, floodplains, shaded riverbanks, and meadow edges across much of eastern and central North America, it tolerates partial shade to full sun and prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil.

Pros

  • Graceful, arching foliage with delicate, nodding flower spikes
  • Deer resistant; hosts caterpillars of butterflies and moths
  • Tolerates partial shade to full sun
  • Clump-forming with only gradual spread by short rhizomes

Cons

  • Requires consistently moist soil for best appearance
  • Inconspicuous flowers offer little color until seed spikes mature
  • Slowly spreads into colonies, so may need occasional thinning in small spaces
Why Like Carex sprengelii is a graceful native woodland sedge whose foliage hosts caterpillars of several butterfly and moth species, adding fine structure to rich, mesic woods, floodplains, and meadow edges across much of its North American range.
Highlights
  • Delicate, pendulous flower and fruit spikes add fine textural interest
  • Supports butterfly and moth caterpillars while being rarely browsed by deer
  • Valuable for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and moist meadow edges

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
