Sugar Rush Yellow Wallflower (Erysimum 'Sugar Rush Yellow')
air-ISS-ih-mum 'Sugar Rush Yellow'

Biennial (usually grown as an annual near you) Upright, Bushy, Branched in the Brassicaceae Family
Sweetly fragrant golden-yellow blooms over a strong, well-branched bushy habit, flowering from spring into fall.

'Sugar Rush Yellow' is an F1 hybrid wallflower selection grown for its sweetly fragrant, clear yellow flowers held over a compact, upright, well-branched bushy mound. Like other Sugar Rush selections it's typically treated as a hardy biennial -- planted in late summer or fall for a bit of color that same autumn, followed by a much stronger flush the following spring that can continue into fall.

It's noted for above-average tolerance of wet, windy weather compared to many wallflowers, though it still prefers full sun and good drainage overall. A reliable, long-blooming choice for beds, borders, containers, and patios.

Pros

  • Sweetly fragrant golden-yellow flowers from spring into fall
  • Strong, well-branched, bushy, compact habit
  • Better-than-average tolerance of wet and windy weather
  • Attracts bees and other pollinators

Cons

  • Typically short-lived -- grown as a hardy biennial, not a long-term perennial
  • Best bloom and form benefit from regular deadheading
  • Self-sown seedlings won't come true to this hybrid selection
  • Like other wallflowers, can develop downy mildew if overcrowded
This plant is probably not winter-hardy outdoors where you live.
Highlights A sweetly fragrant, strong-branching Sugar Rush series selection with clear yellow flowers and better-than-average wet-weather tolerance.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
