Evergreen Perennial Low, Clump-Forming, Mounded in the Saxifragaceae Family
A cold-hardy pigsqueak bred over four decades from 'Rotblum,' prized for its evergreen leaves that glow burgundy-red through winter and its clusters of rose-red spring flowers.

Winter Glow Pigsqueak (also sold as 'Winterglut') is an evergreen perennial developed by Swedish plantsman Magnus Nilsson over nearly forty years of selection from Bergenia 'Rotblum,' before Jelitto introduced it as a reliable seed strain in 1988. Large, leathery, cabbage-like leaves emerge deep green in spring and summer, then take on rich burgundy-red tones through fall and winter, giving the plant strong multi-season interest. In spring, clusters of rose-red to deep pink, bell-shaped flowers rise on sturdy stems above the foliage. Reaching 12-18 inches tall and wide, it forms a low, clump-forming mound that spreads slowly by rhizomes. Adaptable to full sun through full shade and a wide range of soils, it's a reliably cold-hardy, low-maintenance choice for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and groundcover plantings.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.
