Double Scoop Raspberry Coneflower (Echinacea 'Balsceras' DOUBLE SCOOP RASPBERRY)
eh-kih-NAY-shah 'Balsceras' DOUBLE SCOOP RASPBERRY

Deciduous Perennial Upright, Clump-Forming in the Asteraceae Family
Fully double, pom-pom-style raspberry-pink blooms with a dark pink center hold their color beautifully from summer into fall.
Echinacea 'Balsceras' DOUBLE SCOOP RASPBERRY, bred by Jianping Ren for Ball Horticultural Company (US Plant Patent 23,117), was one of the original members of the Double Scoop series of fully double coneflowers. Its raspberry-pink, pom-pom-style blooms have a dark pink center and paler, downward-facing outer petals, giving each flower real depth and a long-lasting show from summer into fall. Clump-forming and upright, it holds its color well as flowers age and draws bees and butterflies despite its fuller flower form. Once established, it tolerates both dry spells and brief wet periods, making it an adaptable, low-fuss choice for borders and cutting gardens.

Pros

  • Fully double raspberry-pink pom-pom blooms, summer into fall
  • Color holds well as flowers age, good for cutting
  • Attracts bees and butterflies; tolerates both dry and brief wet conditions
  • Low-maintenance, deer resistant native-heritage perennial

Cons

  • Fully double flowers may offer less accessible pollen/nectar than single-flowered coneflowers
  • May need division every few years to stay vigorous
  • Best bloom develops in full sun; shade can reduce flowering

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
