Kickin Carmine Red Aster (Aster novae-angliae 'Kickin Carmine Red')
ASS-ter no-vay-AN-glee-ay 'Kickin Carmine Red'

Deciduous Perennial Compact, Mounded in the Asteraceae Family
A compact, no-pinch New England Aster with carmine-red, gold-centered flowers that blanket the plant from late summer into fall, when most perennials are winding down.

Kickin Carmine Red is part of the Kickin series of compact New England Asters bred by Walters Gardens, selected to stay full and well-branched without the pinching or staking older, taller New England Aster varieties often need. From late summer into mid-fall it is covered in carmine-red, gold-centered flowers on a dense, mounded 2 to 3 foot plant, providing a strong burst of color right as most other perennials are finishing for the season.

Pros

  • Compact, no-pinch habit that stays full without staking
  • Abundant carmine-red flowers from late summer into fall
  • Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators
  • Tolerates clay soil and occasional wet conditions

Cons

  • Best flowering and form require full sun
  • Like most New England Asters, can be prone to powdery mildew in crowded or poorly ventilated plantings
Highlights One of the Kickin series of compact, no-pinch New England Asters, bred specifically to hold a tidy, well-branched form and cover itself in bloom without the flopping or staking older tall asters often need.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

No Pricing or Availability Right Now

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
