About Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums are related to dahlias, sunflowers, marigolds, zinnias, and cosmos. Each of their blooms is made of hundreds of tiny flowers called florets. Chrysanthemums, sometimes called mums or chrysanths, are native to East Asia and northeastern Europe. Most species originate from East Asia and the center of diversity is in China. Countless horticultural varieties and cultivars exist.
|
Pros
- Fantastic blooms in late summer or fall (depending on variety) when most flowers are fading
- Great for borders, containers and mass plantings
- Pairs well with pumpkins and ornamental grasses for fall displays
- Attracts bees and butterflies
- Are a natural insecticide often used in vegetable gardens to repel unwanted insects like ticks, silverfish, roaches, and Japanese beetles.
|
Cons
- It's hard to establish mums as true perennials by the time they turn up in fall
- Even hardy varieties may not survive harsh winters without proper mulching and drainage
- Bloom time is spectacular, but relatively brief -- typically 4-6 weeks
- Need to actively pinch back in order to get bushier growth with more blooms
