Gigi Orange Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum 'Gigi Orange')
kris-AN-theh-mum 'Gigi Orange'

Deciduous Perennial (usually grown as an annual near you) Mounded in the Asteraceae Family
Compact Syngenta 'Gigi' series mum with bright orange double blooms in early fall — low-maintenance and well suited to containers and garden borders.
Chrysanthemum 'Gigi Orange' is a compact garden mum from Syngenta's 'Gigi' series. Unlike several of its series-mates, no US plant patent could be confirmed for this specific cultivar despite a real search effort across Google Patents and the RHS plant database, so breeder and precise registered measurements are not given here. Multiple independent retailers describe a compact, mounded plant that produces an abundance of small, double, bright orange blooms beginning in early September and continuing into fall, set against green foliage. Like other garden mums, it is a reliable fall-blooming perennial where winter-hardy, but in the Chicago area is most often grown and sold as a one-season annual for containers and porch displays.

Pros

  • Masses of double, bright orange daisy-form blooms in early fall
  • Compact, well-branched habit suited to containers and small spaces
  • Low-maintenance, easy-care garden mum
  • Attracts butterflies and other pollinators

Cons

  • Short bloom season typical of fall mums
  • Sap and foliage can cause contact-dermatitis reactions in sensitive individuals
  • In Chicago, more reliably grown and sold as an annual than left to overwinter
This plant may be mostly winter-hardy outdoors where you live, but it may need protection to survive extreme weather.
Highlights Part of Syngenta's 'Gigi' breeding series, known for its compact habit and abundant bright orange blooms; unlike several series-mates, no US plant patent could be confirmed for this specific cultivar.

Field-Grown vs. Greenhouse-Grown Plants

Plants which are well-adapted to our local climate are most often field-grown (outside). Field-grown plants are generally cheaper and have the advantage of already somewhat acclimated to our cold winters, but that means they’re not artificially far along in the spring and tend to bloom at the normal time in our area.

Spring annuals and tender perennials are typically grown in Greenhouses so they can be ready and luxurious exactly when customers want them. Some perennials are also “forced” into early bloom in greenhouses. In May, there can be a very big difference between field-grown and greenhouse-grown plants of the same type. The latter typically look good right away (so they’re a great choice where that’s important), but we typically pay a premium for it.

We order from a rotating cast of the best nurseries in the Great Lakes region. It looks like we've offered this plant in the past, but the nurseries we're working with this week don't appear to have it in stock at the moment.

Our goal is to bring as many plants together under "one roof" as possible, so we'll try hard to make it available again in the future!
